My name is Dr. Gary Alvarez, and I welcome you all from the land of Mickey Mouse East, Orlando, FL. Originally from the big apple (New York City), I have lived in Orlando for the last 22 years. Previously, I lived in New Jersey and worked on Wall Street for 20+ years as a computer programmer and IT professional, including designing systems on the floor of the NY Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the American Stock Exchange (AMEX). I was employed in the aerospace field in Florida for over 17 years as a manager of Information Technology, working for companies like Northrop Grumman and ATOS.
About Me
I have a BS in Computer Science from St. John’s University, MA in Information Technology Mgmt. from Webster University and a Doctorate in Information Technology from Capella University. I also have a current Security+ Cert from CompTIA. In the past, I’ve held other certifications, such as CCNE/CCNA (Cisco) and MCSE & MCSD (Microsoft).
My experience is in almost all aspects of IT computing, from IT Security & Auditing, IT Management, Project Management, networks, SQL database DBA, complete project life cycle systems design & implementation, and programming in various languages. I am also a robotics enthusiast and volunteer speaker/advocate for kids in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math).
Personal Info
On my free time, I build partially automated full sized Star Wars Droids, like R2-D2 and C2-B5 as part of the worldwide Star Wars group, R2 Builders. My R2 is 11 years old, is semi-automated, walks, talks, sings, and plays music. The kids absolutely love him when he comes along to our STEM presentations, senior presentations on Robotics and AI, children's hospital visits, Make-a-Wish events, Disney and Lucasfilm requests, and conventions in Central Florida.
R2 is only one of several robots that I have built with built-in GPS, Bluetooth, touch screens, motion and light sensors, crude AI, and WI-FI. Some have appeared in public sci-fi conventions, video productions, and private organizations. My other passion is travel. I have been to almost every state in the U.S. and many European countries.
